The government of Nigeria has approved plans to build an international airport in Ebonyi State in the southeast of the country.
The agreement to the project was given in a letter to David Umahi, the governor of the state. Ebonyi had been lobbying for the project as a way of improving communications and boosting economic growth.
The southeast of Nigeria is presently without an international airport following a government decision to close down Akanu Ibiam International Airport in neighbouring Enugu state. It will remain closed for an indefinite period while repairs are carried out to its runway.
The approval came after a technical team from the transport ministry visited the proposed site between the Ezza South and Ezza North local government areas near the state capital of Abakaliki.
The letter added that the project, which will be state-financed, depended on its complying with Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority requirements and relevant environmental regulations.

I think the present government under the leadership of engineer Chief David Umahi has indeed brought hope to the people of Ebonyi State through his selfless effort and concern to bring the state to a certain height. Previously, the infrastructural, social and political view of this southern state was an object of “profound intuition” and of a rational approach alike where different individuals give both subjective and an objective supposition on the state of Ebonyi. That is to say that while some individuals see Ebonyi State as a very backward state in Nigeria by an imaginary conception some others who have visited or live in Ebonyi State attache “effort and hopefulness” to the young state although some in this class see it as the later conceive it…
In brief the latest development in the state has gotten rid of some inferiority in the members of the state accruing to the latest happenstance as regards development in the state. Indigenes of the state no longer like before deny their origin of being from the state, but can proudly say now “I am from Ebonyi State” a saying which was like swallowing a bone down to the stomach. Thanks to the workaholic Governor who has in his little way made great impact with speed on the development of Ebonyi State proving him to be the “eagle eyed” governor as people see him to be.
