A consortium led by Austrian contractor Strabag is to build a $240m (€212m) road in southwestern Hungary that will "sing" a rock song to drivers when they go at the right speed.
Cars will act as needles on a record player on the specially-designed section of expressway so that tires moving over grooves in the road’s surface let drivers groove to the soulful rock ballad "67-es út" ("Route 67") by Hungarian band Republic.
"This project shows how much creativity there can be in transportation infrastructures," said Thomas Birtel, Strabag chief executive. "We are delighted to be able to realise this interesting project for Hungary’s national infrastructure company."
The musical piece of road is part of a larger contract to build and widen the R67 expressway in Hungary.
Of the 33km of expressway between Kaposfüred and Látrány in southwestern Hungary, Strabag is in charge of the new construction of a 10.3km section as well as the renovation and widening of a further 10.1km.
The firm holds 53.2% of the consortium of the $240m (€212m) project.
Officials will have to wait and see if the choice of song encourages drivers to maintain the prescribed speed or not.
