‘Crumbling’ towers in Taipei to form new district gateway

Dutch studio MVRDV has unveiled the design for the Nangang Pair, two office towers that appear as a single building split in two, that will act as an eastern gateway for Taipei’s Nangang district.

At their bottom corners, the tower façades appear to crumble to emphasise the gap between the buildings at its base. The opening acts as an entrance to the technology and finance district and leads to a public plaza.

“It is a literal gesture of opening; the towers pull apart to frame the neighbourhood and invite the flow of the city through the building rather than blocking it,” said MVRDV founder Winy Maas.

The development by Jut Group connects Kunyang Station and frames views towards Hsin Hsin Park.

The design creates fragments along the inner faces of the towers in the form of protruding balconies, leaving corresponding indentations in the opposite volume.

The break in the massing is emphasised with juxtaposed facades, with the outer sides of the towers clad in a jutting glass curtain wall and the inner faces treated with a finer, flush veneer.

The ground floor accommodates lobbies, retail spaces, cafes and restaurants, while the third storey contains communal services for tenants.

At the crown will be a rooftop garden with rainwater harvesting systems and solar panels.
