Tower Holdings Group has unveiled plans to build Ireland’s tallest building as part of the €200m redevelopment of the Custom House Quay site in Cork, southern Ireland.
Tower, a New York-based development company with Irish owners, says the hotel tower will contain 240 rooms and 25 services apartments. At 34 storeys, the tower would be the tallest building in Ireland, surpassing the 22-storey Capital Dock in Dublin.
Conor Lee, Tower Holdings Ireland’s director of operations, said the Custom House Quay development would be the centrepiece of Cork’s new business district. He added: "As the tallest building in Ireland, the hotel itself will be a focal point for the city rising. Equally, the design is aimed at preserving the existing infrastructure for future generations through the addition of new tourism and commercial offerings … For the first time ever, this entire area will be fully opened up to the people of Cork."
The developers said the development would include "a programme of cultural events, retail, food and beverage businesses, office space and recreational areas which will be fully accessible to the public, in an effort to create a realm for the wider community".
The design of the building is by US architect Gensler, in association with local firm Henry J Lyons.
A planning application is expected to be lodged later this month. Permission has already been granted for another Tower development, a 15-storey, €20m office building to be called the Prism, located near the city’s bus station.
