Work on Genoa bridge nears completion after “a show of confidence and courage”

Construction work on the Genoa bridge, a replacement for the structure that collapsed in August 2018 killing 43 people, has been allowed to continue by the Italian government despite the Covid-19 pandemic

Measures to protect workers have been implemented, these include recording the body temperature of everyone entering the site, enhanced hygiene, requiring the use of face masks and social distancing.

The 1,067m bridge, which was designed by Italian architect Renzo Piano, is being built by a joint venture between Italian contractors Salini Impregilo and Fincantieri Infrastructure.

Salini Impregilo says that the bridge’s main structure is almost complete, and the remaining four sections of the deck will be installed by the end of April 2020.

Nicola Meistro, Salini Impregilo’s general manager of domestic operations, said: "All of our people have shown a great ability to adapt to this new context. It is thanks to them, and the suppliers and the rest of the production chain, that the Genoa bridge is a model for all of Italy, a country whose people know how to roll up their sleeves in a show of confidence and courage."

Last month the bridge was lit up with the colours of the Italian flag, to express solidarity with the country’s suffering in the coronavirus outbreak.
