World Cup-winner donates earnings to build Mauritanian mosque

French midfielder Ousmane Dembélé has announced that he will donate his earnings for France’s World Cup triumph to a charity that will build a mosque in Mauritania.

The 21 year old, who was born in Normandy to a Mauritanian mother and a Malian father, scored the fourth goal against Croatia in the final.

The Barcelona star aims to finance in the mosque Diaguily, the region in southern Mauritania his mother is from. Before agreeing to play for France, Dembélé turned down an offer from the Mauritanian football federation to join the national side.

Other French players are also planning to donate their earnings. Kylian Mbappé, the teenage hero of France’s campaign, is to give his €400,000 to Premiers de Cordée, a sports charity for disabled children.
