A consortium led by Acciona, Aecom and Aurecon has won a US$614m contract to design and build the Bunbury Outer Ring Road, Western Australia’s biggest infrastructure project.
The Southwest Connex consortium, which also includes Australia’s MACA Civil and local company NRW Contracting, will now finalise the details with Western Australian state transport agency Main Roads before it is signed in September.
The 27km-long project will reroute freight and regional traffic from local roads and improve access to Bunbury and other destinations.
The development will contain three sections: northern, central and southern, and is due to be completed in 2014.
Rita Saffioti, Western Australia’s transport minister, said: "This project will deliver huge benefits for the economy, both during its construction and once in operation and I’m pleased to see a local company play such a big role in its construction.
"Maximising local business procurement and Aboriginal participation are key objectives for the project and we have set a target of approximately $216m to be allocated to local businesses to subcontract on the project."
