A consortium led by Spain’s Acciona has won a contract to design and build the westward extension of Toronto’s Line 5 Eglinton.
On behalf of Ontario transport body Metrolinx, the team that includes Amico and Alberici will build the 9.2km light rail line and seven new stations, four of which will be underground, beginning at the already-constructed Mount Dennis Station to Renforth Drive.
Trillium Rail Partners’ scope of work includes track construction, electrification, communication, signalling and train control systems, tunnel and elevated guideway fit out and tunnel ventilation.
Canada’s WSP will be the primary lead designer.
Corina Moore, WSP Canada’s executive vice president of transportation and infrastructure, said: “The Eglinton Crosstown West Extension is a vital east-west transit connector for Toronto, one that will significantly reduce commuting times for people throughout the city.
“We are proud to be part of a project that, once complete, will make it easier for thousands of people in the Greater Toronto Area to get to the places and people they value most.”
Ontario transportation authorities estimate that when completed the full line will reduce 6.5 million annual vehicle trips.
