A UK and US team made up of Arup, Beyer Blinder Belle Architects, Grimshaw, and Vanasse Hangen Brustlin has unveiled its design for the Washington Union Station Expansion project (SEP) in Washington, DC.
The team was chosen to work on the expansion in 2016, after which its design underwent changes owing to a concept screening report in 2017 and an environmental impact statement in 2020.
The SEP will be next to the current station, giving it access to Metrorail, DC Streetcar and bus services. Improved pedestrian access and vehicle and cycle routes will be added.
It will contain a new train concourse that connects with the existing beaux-arts station, as well as modernised tracks and platforms, a bus facility, passenger concourses and below-ground parking.
Nikolas Dando-Haenisch, a partner at Grimshaw, said: “The civic significance and historic context of Union Station is a fantastic springboard for the station expansion project. Our designs will maintain the historic station as a destination in the district but also integrate it into fabric of the surrounding neighbourhoods and deliver an improved passenger experience for 21st-century travel.”
The SEP will now move into the next stage of concept development in tandem with the environmental review process.
Washington Union Station accommodates 40 million passengers a year, making it one of the US’ busier rail terminuses.
