The federal government of Australia and the state government of Queensland have announced a joint US$2.3bn investment for the 2032 Olympic Games in Brisbane. The money will go towards the US$4.7bn required for the Games Venue Infrastructure Programme.
Seventeen venues across Queensland will be built or refurbished. These will include a National Aquatic Centre and a 63,000-seat stadium at Victoria Park, which will host the opening and closing ceremonies.
Other sites are the new-build Logan Indoor Sports Centre and the Moreton Bay Indoor Sports Centre, as well as the refurbished Barlow Park and Sunshine Coast stadiums.
Some venues have already been allocated federal funding, such as the Redland Whitewater Centre, the Anna Meares Velodrome and BMX track, and the Brisbane International Shooting Centre.
Catherine King, the federal minister for infrastructure, said: “The Sydney 2000 games left an incredible legacy and many Australians have memories that have lasted for decades, and will last for decades more.
“The Australian government’s commitment of A$3.4bn towards the venues is the single largest contribution any Australian government has made towards sporting infrastructure in this country.”
Previously, US$8.1bn in transport funding was allocated to Queensland, including upgrades to the Bruce Highway that runs from Brisbane to the Sunshine Coast, and the first stage of the Direct Sunshine Coast Rail between Beerwah and Caloundra.
