Balfour Beatty has won a $145m contract to build a 1,070-bed accommodation block for the University of Texas at Austin.

The facility will contain single and double rooms with community bathrooms and amenities such as lounges and study spaces, as well as a housing office and conference centre.

Balfour Beatty is working alongside general contractor Andres and architects Clark Nexsen & Levy Dykema on the scheme.

Jeffrey Tate, Balfour Beatty Campus Solutions’ vice president, said: “This project will not only provide students with safe, affordable on-campus housing in a modern living environment, but will also contribute to the university’s broader goals of enhancing campus life and supporting academic success.”

Demolition work has already begun at the site, which previously held 200 beds in six buildings.

The facility will be managed by the university and will open for the autumn 2027 semester.
