Besix to build half-kilometre-long pedestrian bridge in Brisbane

A consortium led by Besix Watpac, the Australian subsidiary of Belgium’s Besix Group, was yesterday awarded the design and construction of the Kangaroo Point Green Bridge in Brisbane by the city council.

The contract worth A$140m sees it building a bridge for pedestrians and cyclists nearly half a kilometre long (460m) over the Brisbane River connecting Kangaroo Point (from Scott Street) to Brisbane’s central business district, setting down near Alice Street.

The bridge’s walkways will be shaded by solar panels and a restaurant will hang over the river.

Besix Watpac said 40% of suppliers to the project will be from the Brisbane local government area, and some 90% would be from South East Queensland. The project will target 5% indigenous participation.

Work starts in late 2021, with delivery planned for the second half of 2023.

Pierre Sironval, Deputy CEO of Besix Group, said: "We will deliver to the city of Brisbane and its people a first-class infrastructure that is both elegant, impressive and extremely useful for mobility".
