With Covid-19 hospital admissions down 34% from their peak on 12 April, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer has said the state’s construction industry can get back to work on 7 May.
Michigan has been among the hardest hit by the coronavirus pandemic in the US, with some 40,400 confirmed cases and 3,670 deaths as of 30 April.
"It shouldn’t come as a surprise that the governor would open a lower-risk field, like she has said at previous press conferences," the governor’s spokeswoman told Detroit Metro Times.
Whitmer plans to sign an executive order on 1 May allowing residential and commercial construction to resume after projects were suspended on 24 March.
That stay-at-home order, from which construction is now excused, has been extended to 15 May.
The governor also said she would start reopening the state’s economy based on sector, geography, and data on coronavirus cases and hospital capacity, reported the Metro Times.
Earlier, Whitmer lifted restrictions to allow some retailers to reopen for curbside pickup or delivery.
The Metro Times said Michigan is showing signs of controlling the virus.
The number of Covid-19 hospital admissions has declined 34.2% since peaking at 3,986 on 12 April.
In the same period, the number of patients on a ventilator dropped 41.3%, from 1,365 to 801.
