US equipment maker Caterpillar plans to invest $1bn to expand its manufacturing plant in Sanford, North Carolina with a new facility producing compact track loaders and telehandlers to meet increased demand from small businesses.
Caterpillar says the vehicles are used in construction, landscaping, agriculture and material handling.
The North Carolina plant was selected for expansion because of the company’s strong presence in the state, its existing manufacturing operations and the local workforce.
Rod Shurman, Caterpillar’s president of construction industries, said: “As demand for compact equipment continues to increase, we’re investing to better serve this growing segment of customers.
“This investment is another way we are solving our customers’ toughest challenges by expanding access to the products, solutions and services they need to work more efficiently.”
Caterpillar claims the project will create jobs in automation, robotics, digital manufacturing and advanced production systems.
