Cimic to build New Zealand’s largest indoor sports venue in Christchurch

CPB Contractors, a subsidiary of Australian construction group Cimic, has been awarded a US$151m contract for the Christchurch Metro Sports Facility, which will become New Zealand’s largest indoor sports venue.

The 30,000 sq m development will consist of three buildings containing:

  • A 10-lane swimming pool seating 1,000 spectators
  • An aquatics leisure facility
  • A show court that can accommodate 2,500 spectators
  • Nine indoor netball and basketball courts.

CPB Contractors are working for state company Otakaro.

Michael Wright, Cimic’s chief executive, said: "This project continues CPB Contractors’ long track record of providing important infrastructure in New Zealand.

"In particular, CPB Contractors has taken a leading role delivering critical infrastructure for the Christchurch community, including the Christchurch Hospital Acute Services Building and Te Pae, the Christchurch convention and exhibition centre, both currently in delivery."

Construction on the project is due to begin in May 2019 and will be completed in late 2021.

Recently, CPB Contractors was awarded contracts in Melbourne, Sydney and New Zealand.
