A trio of teams has won contracts worth a combined $2.6bn for new and upgraded Amtrak facilities in Boston, New York and Washington, DC.

The design and build contacts for the Northeast Corridor will allow the national rail operator to introduce the new Airo trains in 2027, which are capable of travelling up to 125mph.

In Boston, a joint venture between SPS New England and Railroad Construction Company will design and construct a new maintenance facility and renovate existing facilities for trains that travel to Baltimore, Chicago, New York and Philadelphia.

Due to be completed in 2029 are construction of a two-track maintenance and inspection facility, and the renovation of the two-track regional service and inspection facility into a two-track servicing cleaning facility.

In New York, a Scalamandre and Citnalta joint venture will design and construct new maintenance, inspection and servicing facilities, due to be completed by 2030.

A Clark and Herzog joint venture will build three exterior service and cleaning tracks, renovate two two-track maintenance facilities and replace water mains infrastructure at Ivy City Yard in Washington, DC. The phased work is due to be completed in 2030.

Roger Harris, Amtrak’s president, said: “With ridership and revenue at all-time highs, we’re making great strides to meet this growing demand with new, state-of-the-art trains that will improve service reliability and the overall customer experience, thanks to strong support from the Trump Administration, Congress, and many other partners.”
