Construction has begun on Guangzhou New Airport, the first phase of which will include a 260,000-sq-m terminal, two parallel runways and 94 aircraft stands.
The development is located in Gaoming, 60km south west of Guangzhou and an hour’s drive from Foshan (pictured), Jiangmen and Zhaoqing, an area with 20 million inhabitants.
When completed by 2030, the airport will handle 30 million passengers a year and 500,000 tonnes of cargo.
It will complement Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport, operating on different routes and sharing hub functions.
Guangzhou New Airport will plug into regional transport infrastructure including high-speed rail and an expanded expressway network.
Earlier this year, China said it would spend $42bn on infrastructure including Guangzhou New Airport, a cross-sea ferry between Zhanjiang and Haikou, plus water and energy projects.
