American EV maker Tesla is to break ground on a battery factory in Shanghai in May, according to Chinese state news agency Xinhua.

The facility will be capable of manufacturing 10,000 lithium-ion batteries a year. These will be used to supplement wind and solar farms.

The plant is to be built in Lingang New Area in Shanghai’s Free Trade Zone.

Reuters recently reported that Tesla plans to lay off more than 10% of its workforce. Speaking on X, formerly Twitter, Elon Musk, Tesla founder, said: “About every five years, we need to reorganise and streamline the company for the next phase of growth.”

In 2019, Tesla opened a gigafactory in Shanghai, which can produce 750,000 vehicles per year.
