Covid-hit San Francisco airport postpones construction by at least six months

Construction work at San Francisco International Airport (SFO) has been postponed by at least six months as a result of reduced passenger numbers caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The first phase of Harvey Milk Terminal 1, including construction of a new North Check-In lobby area will be delayed until at least October 2023.

Another phase, which involves adding seven more gates and a post-security connection to the International Terminal, will proceed with a planned completion date of May 2021.

Work has already been completed on first nine gates of Terminal 1, which opened in July 2019, and an additional nine gates and south check-In lobby in May 2020.

Part of the Courtyard 3 Connector project, involving the fit-out of office space will be postponed, but connections between Terminal 2 and Terminal 3 will be completed as originally planned in October 2021.

Twenty smaller upgrade projects will also be postponed, according to an SFO press release.

SFO previously postponed work on the $1bn Terminal 3 West project for at least a year.
