The state government of Queensland, Australia has picked Cimic group company CPB Contractors to lead the detailed design phase of the A$1.2bn (US$788m) New Bundaberg Hospital.

Bundaberg is a city of some 70,000 in the Wide Bay-Burnett region of Queensland’s Sunshine Coast, some 370km north of Brisbane.

Queensland’s health department said it will be the biggest-ever health infrastructure investment in the region.

It replaces a hospital built in 1914 that is close to capacity with limited opportunities to expand. The state notes that the population of the Wide Bay-Burnett region is growing and ageing.

The six-storey new hospital will provide 121 extra beds, an expanded emergency department, and better acute, medical, surgical, and mental health services.

The health department said CPB must deliver a guaranteed price for the project before main construction starts.

New roads giving access to the site for construction vehicles were finished in March.

The new hospital is expected to open in the second half of 2027.

CPB said the project would employ a peak workforce of some 500 people and generate more than 2,500 local jobs during construction.
