Budimex, the Polish subsidiary of Spain’s Ferrovial, has announced the opening of Warsaw West railway station, Poland’s busiest, after a project spanning five years.

It can now handle up to 60,000 passengers and 1,000 trains per day.

Built on the site of the old station, the new Warsaw West features a large entrance hall, nine surface-level platforms, a shopping arcade and underground access corridor.

The new total platform area is 35,000-sq-m and connected to the passenger walkway by lifts and escalators, making it easier for travellers to navigate the station.

35km of new track is supported by 137 turnouts, 191 signals and 580 information displays.

The station contains 8,000-sq-m of photovoltaic installation, able to provide approximately 30% of electricity demand.

600 people worked on the project.

Ferrovial says the station is one of the most technologically advanced in the region.
