Fly over: Besix is re-modelling traffic flow in old Dubai

Beating five other bidders, Belgium’s Besix Group is building two large flyover bridges and a two-lane tunnel to rationalise traffic in the Shindagha district of Dubai, near Port Rashid.

The goal is to cut traffic jams at the major Al Falcon junction in the old Dubai district.

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) awarded the contract to Six Construct, a Besix entity in the Middle East.

The two main bridges, 466m and 792m long, are cast-in-situ, post-tensioned, box-shaped concrete bridge structures.

The tunnel is 456m long, made of reinforced concrete retaining wall and slab, and is covered over 85m length in the centre, under the road junction. The at-grade signalised junction under the bridge will also be improved.

Besix cannot halt traffic, so works will be carried out in sequenced phases of road diversions.

Works include bridge works, pavement structure, signing and road marking, street lighting, traffic systems, storm water drainage system, diversion and protection of the existing services.

Construction started in October 2019, with completion expected in 2022.
