Gammon Construction team uses low-carbon concrete in Hong Kong

Balfour Beatty subsidiary Gammon Construction and developer Hongkong Land are using carbon dioxide mineralisation technology on concrete poured at Hong Kong’s Landmark retail area.

Engineered by Canadian company CarbonCure, the system injects captured CO₂ into fresh concrete during mixing, creating a chemical reaction to form a mineral that permanently traps carbon.

The technique is combined with a low-carbon concrete mix containing around 40% ground granulated blast-furnace slag to cut cement content by up to 7% without compromising the concrete’s performance.

Gammon said the approach cuts carbon emissions by 34% compared to traditional concrete use.

The use of CarbonCure’s concrete mix was approved by Hong Kong’s Buildings Department in September 2025 following an 18-month testing and preparation period.

The project is also using other sustainable construction techniques, such as building with 100% green rebar and 100% sustainable timber.

The project, called Tomorrow’s Central, is a three-year modernisation of the Landmark retail space involving façade, office and lobby renovations.

Eddie Tse, Gammon Construction Group’s sustainability manager, said: “By permanently mineralising carbon within building materials and reducing cement use, lower carbon concrete represents a meaningful step forward in embodied‑carbon reduction.

“With this successful deployment, we look forward to extending similar innovations across the industry and collaborating with more clients to drive low‑carbon construction in Hong Kong.”
