The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has awarded Californian contractor Granite a $48m contract for reconstruction work on Highway 101 in Santa Barbara County.

Improvements include a lane for cars with more than one occupant in each direction.

The contract is part of a larger, $195m project: the fourth mainline segment awarded to Granite under its role as construction manager and general contractor for work on Highway 101 between Carpinteria to Santa Barbara.

Larry Camilleri, Granite’s vice president of regional operations, said: “This project is another step to help alleviate the rush-hour traffic coming into and leaving Santa Barbara and we are excited to deliver this important project for Caltrans and the Santa Barbara County communities surrounding the project.”

Construction starts immediately and is due to finish in June 2026.
