US-based Hill International is project managing the expansion of Assan Port in İskenderun, southern Turkey.

İskenderun was among the cities devastated by the major earthquake in Turkey and Syria in February this year. It caused a major fire among containers at the port.

The expansion aims to boost the port’s annual cargo handling capacity from 250,000 containers to 400,000.

Contractors will build a 50,000-sq-m off-dock container yard equipped with electric, rubber-tyred gantry cranes to expand the port’s container stacking capacity to handle Super Post-Panamax vessels.

Another 50,000-sq-m marine-side container stacking area will be built in two phases.

Hill will project manage these two projects, and the design process for a jetty expansion.

It is also leading a study and engineering procurement for a comprehensive post-earthquake hazard assessment to enhance the port’s earthquake resilience.

The firm’s Istanbul team will monitor the projects’ costs, project controls, and contract management.
