International consortium chosen for Rail Baltica station at Riga airport

BSL Infra, a consortium made up of Austrian and Latvian contractors, has won an international competition to build the Rail Baltica station at Riga international Airport.

Linz-based Swietelsky will work with Latvia’s SIA Binders and AS LNK Industries Construction on the €237m station. The project includes building a three-level station building, overpass structures and access roads.

The station’s ground level will be an access floor, the second storey will be the ticket hall and the third will have the platforms. The façade will reference traditional Latvian wooden architecture.

Rail Baltica trains will run through the airport’s station four times a day, and a twice-hourly service will link it to Riga Central, an eight-minute journey.

Work on the project is due to begin in May 2021 and will be completed over five stages, concluding in December 2025.

Rail Baltica is an 870km, €5bn plan to extend Europe’s rail network to Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.
