Design team chosen for 870km Rail Baltica project

A joint venture between the three Baltic States, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, has moved forward with plans for Rail Baltica, a 870km, €5bn project to extend the European rail network to Estonia.

Following an international competition, Italian firm 3TI Progetti and Polish company SBS Engineering have been selected to introduce "architectural, landscaping and visual identity guidelines for the railway infrastructure elements of Rail Baltica".

The contract involves the standardised designs of stations, railway bridges, signage, noise barriers and other structures, the Rail Baltica organisation announced yesterday.

3TI Progetti and SBS Engineering will work with stakeholder groups such as architects, landscape and interior architects, spatial planners, universities, railway administrators and municipalities in all three Baltic States.

The team will also host feedback workshops and presentations in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.

Michele Amerio, 3TI Progetti’s technical director, said: "The purpose of these architectural guidelines is to connect these three counties having a common language and at the same time emphasise the individual identity of each country."

The preparation of the design guidelines will last for 35 weeks.
