UK-headquartered contractor Multiplex will deliver early contractor involvement works for the first package of Sydney Airport’s A$3bn Eastern Expansion Program (EEP), which will integrate the airport’s domestic and international terminals and allow it to expand to accommodate 72 million passengers a year, up from 42 million currently.
Multiplex will work alongside design consultants Grimshaw and Mott MacDonald on integrated planning and design, and to manage risk in preparation for infrastructure delivery in a live operational environment.
Multiplex noted that building at a live airport requires careful management of aviation operations, passenger movements, logistics, site access, safety and security.
“This is a highly complex project in the heart of a live airport precinct,” said Paul Willis, Sydney Airport Group’s planning and delivery executive.
“Early collaboration between the airport, designers and contractor will help us test how the project can be built and staged safely and efficiently, while minimising impacts on passengers, airlines and airport operations.”
Skanska starts work this month with construction due to begin in 2027. The EEP is due to be completed in the early 2030s.
When fully completed in 2045, the airport expansion will allow for freight volumes to rise by 133% to 1.4 million tonnes a year, and will support an additional 1,500 jobs.
The project includes redeveloping Sydney Airport’s Eastern Terminal and upgrades to the baggage handling system, car parking infrastructure, new freight and logistics facilities, and airside apron and taxiway infrastructure upgrades.
