Three Australian teams have been shortlisted to build the terminal of the US$3.8bn Western Sydney Airport.

The shortlisted contenders are Multiplex Constructions, Watpac Construction and a joint venture between Lendlease Building and CPB Contractors, a subsidiary of Cimic.

Design of the terminal is currently under way, and is being carried out by Zaha Hadid Architects and Cox Architecture.

The Australian/South African engineer Aurecon will provide design services, and US contractor Bechtel will act as delivery partner and project manager for the airport. The masterplan is by UK consulting engineer Arup.

Alan Tudge, Australia’s minister for population, cities and urban infrastructure, said: “Built by local workers, the airport will support 11,000 direct and indirect jobs in the western Sydney region during construction, delivering massive economic benefits to the region.”

Early works on the terminal are expected to begin in 2021, with the airport due to enter operation in 2026.
