A project called the Ambivalent House, to be located below the "Hollywood" sign outside Los Angeles, has won the House of the Future design competition.
The building, which is the work of LA-based architect Hirsuta, will be "approximately spherical", and its "many faces continually recombine to produce new profiles and elevations, an ever-changing, ambivalent object" that is not "viewed or read the same way twice".
The house will float "low to the ground on a single column" and will turn 360° over the course of a year.
Most of the building’s skin is clad in photovoltaic film, including transparent panels over windows.
The competition was organised by Arch Out Loud and Last House on Mulholland attracted 500 entries. Runners-up included a house contained within a faux hill and a semi-transparent wall-less Japanese design covered in a double layer of skin.
It is not known if the design will ever be built, but Arch Out Loud said it may have "construction in its future".
