Case unveils its first electric backhoe

American manufacturer Case has made its entry into the electric construction equipment market with a fully electric backhoe loader.

It says the 580 EV concept, dubbed Project Zeus, offers the same power and performance as a diesel-powered Case backhoe loader, but with zero emissions and considerably reduced operating costs.

Two machines have already been sold to US-based utilities companies, with the concept planned to remain exclusive to the North American market.

Egidio Galano, a product manager for Case Construction Equipment Europe, said: “The 580 EV performs and handles exactly like a traditional Case backhoe. This is crucial when looking to apply exciting new technologies to any Case machine, and means operators can experience the same digging, lifting and craning capabilities from a much quieter and emissions free working environment.”

The 580 EV is powered by a 480-volt, 90-kilowatt hour lithium-ion battery pack that gives around eight hours of run-time depending on the application.

Case said it could save fleets up to 90% in annual vehicle operating costs owing to reduced spend on diesel, engine oil, diesel exhaust fluid and long-term engine maintenance.
