Two subsidiaries of Spanish contractor Ferrovial have signed a $1.5bn contract with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) for the design, construction and maintenance of a 15.3km expansion of Interstate 35.

The project will include the construction of 29km of elevated roadway and the reconstruction and widening of “Loop 1604” general purpose lanes and bridges.

The project will link San Antonio, Live Oak, Selma and Schertz, in Bexar and Guadalupe counties.

Jose Carlos Esteban, president of Ferrovial’s Webber subsidiary, said: “The I-35 serves as an artery for travel and international commerce in Texas, in addition to the project itself bringing jobs and economic opportunities to Texans over the next six years and beyond.”

Angel Luis Sanchez, Ferrovial Construction US’ chief executive, said: “We look forward to leveraging our respective companies’ strengths and our collective commitment to innovation for the benefit of Texas drivers who use I-35 daily to meet work and family obligations.”

Construction on the project is due to begin in 2022 and be completed by 2028.
