Ferrovial-led consortium chosen for $1.2bn Australian toll road

Nexus consortium has been chosen to design, construct, finance, operate and maintain a 41km section of the Toowoomba Second Range Crossing toll road in Queensland, northeast Australia.

The consortium is led by Spanish construction group Cintra Infraestructuras, a subsidiary of Ferrovial, and includes infrastructure PPP investor Plenary Group, Spanish conglomerate Acciona and Australian PLC Transfield Services.

The US$1.2bn project has a concession period of 25 years which starts from the date the highway opens to traffic, scheduled for the end of 2018.

Bypassing the city of Toowoomba, the toll road is expected to divert heavy-goods vehicle traffic out of town.

The consortium will now work with the Queensland state government to finalise the contract.

Once finalised, the contract will be Cintra’s first investment in Australia.
