Foster + Partners designs friendly residential tower for Shenzhen

UK architect Foster + Partners has won a design competition for a residential project in Shenzhen, China, that aims to develop a sense of community between its tenants.

The Qianhai Talents’ Apartments, located in the Qianhai financial district, is targeting what the architect describes as "talents" – single professionals living away from home, who are in need of a sense of community.

Foster + Partners says its research has shown that food is the best way of bringing inhabitants together, so its design incorporates a communal cooking area alongside a private kitchenette in each apartment.

The shared kitchen will be shared between 12 residential units on every three levels, and offers a shared dining space.

Other amenities include podium deck, skygardens, clubhouse, spa, resident townhall, and co-working spaces.

Luke Fox, Foster + Partners’ head of studio, said: "As working practices evolve rapidly, so do patterns of living. The residential rental sector in China is fertile grounds for innovation as more people move to the cities in search of opportunities.

"The shared spaces within the complex facilitate real connections and create positive impact on people’s lives."
