Two subsidiaries of German giant Hochtief have been awarded a $2.2bn contract to build a new, 1.2 million sq ft terminal at San Diego International Airport.
The Turner-Flatiron joint venture will replace the existing 1960s-era terminal with one that has 30 gates, bumping the number up to 62 from 51 gates now.
Work will be carried out in two phases to keep the current number of gates open during construction.
The first phase will add 19 gates, and is due to open in early 2025; the second will add 11 gates when finished in 2027.
The project will add new and redesigned taxiways, and an underground fuel-delivery system to reduce truck journeys, lower greenhouse gas emissions and cut aircraft taxiing times.
Construction is due to begin in the second half of 2021, once environmental permits are issued.
A Hochtief press release states that Flatiron and Turner have previously worked on a San Diego International development.
