Hyundai sets sights on autonomous home-delivery robot

Having dipped its toe in construction robotics by acquiring Boston Dynamics and its robotic site dog, Spot, Hyundai has set its sights on a home-delivery robot that will test the boundaries of robotics and artificial intelligence.

The direction was set with a memorandum of understanding signed yesterday between Hyundai Motor Group and Woowa Brothers, which developed a food ordering app in South Korea, to test a delivery robot, reports Aju Business Daily.

The car-maker will develop the robot to operate in conjunction with the Woowa app.

The parties want it to travel between buildings, navigate the floors and take payment for goods.

Hyundai said: “The need for delivery robots is high, as contactless services are gaining ground in daily lives.”

The agreement follows Hyundai’s unveiling of its DAL-e service robot in January and its $880m acquisition last year of Boston Dynamics.

DAL-e – an acronym for “drive you, assist you, link with you-experience” – is equipped with artificial intelligence technology for facial recognition and language-comprehension.
