Japan aids Rwandan bridge project to the tune of $24m

Japan sent construction materials worth $24m to Rwanda last Friday to speed up the construction of a bridge and borde

The Rusumo bridge over the Kagera River joins Rwanda and Tanzania and is a major transport artery between the two countries.

Chief engineer Hitoshi Kameda said: "By the end of this month more than 200 containers will have arrived in Rwanda from Japan and assembling will be done by the end of August."

Construction of the bridge will be completed by November 2014.

Acting director of Bridges Unit of Rwanda Transport Development Agency, Eng. Honoré Munyanshongore, said the bridge construction was the best solution for the expected increase in traffic in the coming years.
