Mecanoo to turn Taiwanese railway into a long, thin park

Dutch architect Mecanoo is to transform a 1.7km-long railway into a green corridor in the central Taiwanese city of Taichung.

The development will create bike and pedestrian lanes and is described by Mecanoo as an "important catalyst for the development of the old city".

It adds that the project will contain a herb garden, playground, belvederes and a waterpark.

The firm say the public park aims to support the conservation and development of the area’s wildlife and improve connections for pedestrians and bike users.

The project’s circulation system is based on the old railway’s infrastructure, with routes branching out to integrate with existent and future paths. Construction is due to be completed in 2019.
