Stockholm’s newly built Norvik Port has been named Sweden’s best project in the Ã…rets Bygge prize, the most prestigious in the country’s public construction sector.
Work on the project began in 2016 as a way of relieving the pressure on Stockholm’s historic port, and was completed at the end of 2020. It now has a container terminal and a ro-ro ferry berth on 44ha of land.
The work also involved constructing a 4km rail line, as well as roads, bridges, a tunnel and a reservoir.
The jury chose the port because of the success of its project team in completing this complex set of interdependent projects with "impeccable budget and time planning".
Some 40 contractors collaborated on the works, and succeeded in completing them with "unbelievably exemplary" statistics for worker safety.
As well as winning the overall prize, Norvik won the awards’ infrastructure category.
Karl Lagerlöf, director of development for Ports of Stockholm, commented: "Together with all of Ports of Stockholm and the contractors involved, it gives me great pride and pleasure to receive the prestigious Ã…rets Bygge 2021 construction prize.
"Together we succeeded in meeting the time schedule on budget in this complex project, while at the same time prioritising safety and working environment."
The Ã…rets Bygge prize, which is run by construction magazine Byggindustrin, has been running since 1991.
