Russia wades in to help Bangladesh go nuclear

A Russian firm is helping Bangladesh carry out preparation studies for the construction of a nuclear power project by lending $500m.

The Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission signed the deal with an affiliate of Russian state-owned Rosatom last month at a nuclear power conference in St Petersburg.

According to commission chair Abu Sayeed Mohammad Feroz, the deal represents "a milestone to materialise the dream of setting up the first nuclear power plant in Bangladesh."

In 18 months’ time, work will begin on a feasibility study, an environmental impact assessment and a site engineering survey.

Russia has also agreed to provide Bangladesh with 90% of the nuclear power plant’s construction costs.
