Three missing in sink hole over metro construction site in Guangzhou

Rescuers this morning were still searching for three missing people in the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou after a giant hole opened up on a road over a metro tunnel construction site, pulling their vehicles down.

By 5am local time today, 1,100 rescuers and 192 vehicles were at the site of the cave-in, which occurred at around 9.30am Sunday over the site of the Metro Line 11, sucking down two vehicles, reports broadcaster CGTN.

A father and his son were on board one of the vehicles, identified as a refuse collection truck by local media, said CGTN. The second vehicle was reported variously to be an electric car or an electric scooter.

Rescue efforts were hampered by subsequent collapses during Sunday that widened the hole, which reached a depth of 38 metres, said local reports.

Teams spent yesterday trying to fill the expanding hole and reinforce its slopes to avoid further collapses.

Water and gas pipelines were stopped and neighbouring buildings were being monitored, reports Xinhua.

Construction workers in the metro tunnel were evacuated.

The cause of the accident is under investigation.
