US senators launch bid to stop Russian Nord Stream gas pipeline to Germany

Republican and Democratic senators in the US introduced legislation yesterday seeking sanctions that target Nord Stream 2, a $12bn gas pipeline planned from Russia to Germany.

The bill seeks to impose travel and financial sanctions on companies and people involved in building the pipeline.

It was introduced by Republican senators Ted Cruz, John Barrasso and Tom Cotton, and Democrat Jeanne Shaheen, reports Reuters.

Reflecting US concern over Russian influence in Europe, the bill would need to pass both the Senate and House of Representatives, and be signed by President Donald Trump to become law.

Trump has attacked Nord Stream 2, last year accusing Germany, which supports the scheme, of being "captive to Russia".

Nord Stream 2 is led by the Russian state-owned gas company Gazprom, with funding from Germany’s Uniper and BASF unit Wintershall, Anglo-Dutch firm Shell, Austria’s OMV and France’s Engie.

It would carry gas straight to Germany under the Baltic Sea.
