Nice’s former football stadium to be transformed into “green lung”

French designers ABC Architects and Maison Edouard Francois have won a competition to transform the former site of the Stade du Ray football ground in Nice into a low-energy mixed-use development.

Some 300 buildings and 6,000 square metres of commercial space will be built as part of a plan to give the city a "green lung".

The project will link the future Ray Park with Gorbella Boulevard.

Maison Edouard François commented that that the project would give the appearance of a city block that had been "constructed over time, for the smoothest of integrations and optimal continuity".

It added that some buildings would be raised on pilotis "to broaden and extend the presence of nature" and provide more space for leisure activities.

The project is due to be finished in 2017.
