Skanska has finished the $414m renovation of Pennsylvania Station’s Long Island Railroad (LIRR) Concourse in New York City.

Penn District Station Developer LLC awarded the project in 2020 to modernise and widen LIRR’s 33rd Street train hall corridor.

The 27-month design-build project delivered a widened corridor, raised ceiling heights, upgraded lighting and wayfinding, improved mechanical and electrical systems, and new architectural finishes.

Skanska, designer of record Aecom, and architect SOM had to work out how to renovate the hall without disrupting 600,000 commuters that use the station every day.

“The most heavily used concourse of America’s busiest train station has been entirely transformed, both visually and functionally,” said Thomas Prendergast, Aecom’s New York metro executive.
