Skanska completes phase 1 of $1.7bn Bronx highway interchange upgrade

Skanska USA and joint venture partner ECCO III Enterprises have completed the $460m phase one of the New York State Department of Transportation’s (NYSDOT) Hunts Point Interstate Access Improvement program in the South Bronx.

The job involved building a new interchange and pedestrian walkways to improve access to the Hunts Point peninsula, and take trucks off local streets.

Skanska replaced four bridges connecting Bruckner Expressway and Bruckner Boulevard over Amtrak and CSX rail lines.

As well as building three new ramps, Skanska replaced decks, widened exit ramps, removed existing pier bents, and built a new multi-steel plate girder bridge. A new community park was also established, Skanska said in a press release.

Project stakeholders included Amtrak, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, CSX Railway and the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation.

JMT of New York was the project designer with project engineering team consisting of VHB Engineering, COWI, SJH Engineering, Malick & Scherer and Mueser Rutledge Consulting Engineers.
