A joint venture between FlatironDragados and Skanska has landed a $1bn contract from the Virginia Passenger Rail Authority to build the Long Bridge North railway bridge in Washington DC.

The four-track, 1.6km-long bridge will replace the existing two-track bridge connecting Virginia to the capital over the Potomac River.

Freight company CSX will use the two tracks on the bridge’s east side and Amtrak will use the western tracks for local and long-distance services.

Skanska’s share of the contract is worth $658m.

The project is part of a series of two-track to four-track bridge replacements to improve traffic on the busy rail corridor from East Potomac Park to Washington DC’s L’Enfant area.

Michael Viggiano, Skanska USA Civil’s executive vice president, said: “With funding in place and planning and approvals now complete, this highly complex and critical infrastructure project is shovel ready.”

Construction is due to begin in July 2025 and be completed by December 2030.
