Turner Construction has begun construction on a $10bn, four-million-sq-ft data centre campus on behalf of Meta in Lebanon, Indiana.

The facility will have a 1GW computing capacity to support AI and other Meta products.

Construction will create 4,000 jobs at its peak and 300 jobs once operational.

It is designed to achieve LEED Gold certification, with a closed-loop liquid cooling system recirculating water.

Ben Kaplan, Turner Construction Company’s managing director, said: “The scale of the Lebanon Data Center reflects the growing demand for high-performance infrastructure.

“We look forward to working alongside Meta and applying our integrated services and deep mission-critical experience to deliver this data centre safely, sustainably, and efficiently while supporting the long-term growth of the Lebanon community.”

Meta has said it will pay for the data centre’s energy cost and will restore all of the water consumed by the data centre back to the City of Lebanon.

The Environmental and Energy Study Institute says that data centre water use puts nearby communities at risk, with large projects able to consume up to 5 million gallons per day, equivalent to 10,000 to 50,000 people.

Residents living nearby Meta data centres have previously complained about the disruption to the water supply. $64bn of data centres have been blocked or delayed due to local opposition, according to Data Centre Watch.

The data centre will be Meta’s second in Indiana, 27th in the US and 31st in the world.
