Construction at the Austin Convention Center in Texas has entered a new phase with the start of diaphragm wall (D-wall) work.
A joint venture of Turner Construction Company and JE Dunn Construction won the contract to lead the $1.2bn redevelopment and expansion of the convention centre in November 2023.
Due for completion in 2028, the project involves demolishing and rebuilding the centre with double the rentable space.
Turner said the D-wall phase marks the move from demolition and site preparation to structural construction.
The D-wall system will serve as the foundation and earth retention structure for the new centre, providing support for future excavation and below-grade facilities.
Since early September, crews have begun trenching operations in Area E on the east side, between 2nd and 3rd Streets.
They’re using specialised equipment to cut deep, narrow trenches to be filled with reinforced concrete.
Initial concrete pours have already taken place, formwork is being set, and rebar cages are being installed to strengthen the wall panels.
