UK-headquartered Turner & Townsend has been appointed to provide cost management advisory services for the Aukland’s City Rail Link, described as the largest transport infrastructure project ever undertaken in New Zealand.
With a capital value of more than NZ$4.4 billion, it comprises the redevelopment of an existing heritage station and two new underground stations linked by a 3.45km twin tunnel up to 42 metres below the city.
Ross Dunkerley, Regional Director for Turner & Townsend New Zealand, comments: "Upon its completion in 2024, City Rail Link will double Auckland’s rail capacity and improve travel times for the entire transport network. It represents a significant enhancement and modernisation of the city’s urban framework."
Funded by the New Zealand government and Auckland Council, City Rail Link will provide the capacity to manage 54,000 passengers an hour at peak travel times.

1435 millimetre standard gauge will be needed, so that the investment will be well spent.
Once conversion from the 1067 mm Narrow Gauge to Standard Gauge or dual gauge is carried out,
the performance will be greatly improved. All new sleepers installed should be Standard Gauge compatible.
