An American team of Selldorf Architects and the French arm of Studios Architecture has won the Louvre Nouvelle Renaissance design competition for renovating the world’s most visited museum.
The scope of work includes creating a dedicated space for the Mona Lisa, plus a separate modular temporary exhibition space.
The Louvre Colonnade, the museum’s eastern façade and a prime example of French classical architecture from the 16th Century, will be more accessible by changing the entrances, circulation routes and public spaces.
A public space stretching from Saint-Germain-l’Auxerrois to the Louvre esplanade will activate the site’s historic East-West axis.
Two ramps will be added to allow access to the moat level, which will lead to two new underground entrances. A new restaurant and bookstore will be added.
The project hopes to improve visitor reception, security concerns, circulation and greenery.
